BRAIN & SLEEP RESEARCH @ NEW YORK UNIVERSITY LANGONE MEDICAL CENTER

January - May 2019

In 2019, I worked at the New York University Department of Public Health within their medical school. During this experience, I was more focused on user experience and project management.

When I first joined the team, my research professor assigned me a project with the goal of increasing clinical trial participation among NYU Hospital patients.

Given that the NYU medical system already has a pre-existing health and wellness app, we wanted to build a machine learning based customized news feed for patients that would promote new clinical trials suitable for them.

The project was focused in three phases:

Phase I - Conduct patient and provider focus groups to assess scope of project

Phase II - Build out the feature according to phase I specifications

Phase III - Run usability and heuristic testing

Overall the purpose of this study was to get a better understanding of how to provide patients with a more informed view of clinical trials.

Alongside that project, I worked on writing papers on the possible uses of machine learning to help alleiviate bottlenecks within the health service workflow.

During my time at NYU, I also restructured the department’s workflow to an agile-based one, where it was easier for the principal investigators to see what tasks were being worked on for the week and what issues need to be addressed.

As a small side project, I worked on a web scraper that would take recent brain and sleep health articles on NCBI and send it to interested heads of the department.
